Primary Department

Curriculum for Kindergarten - Year 6

Our curriculum encompasses the seven Key Learning Areas mandated by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) and includes a range of specialist subjects. We believe it is essential to complement core learning experiences with skills and values, integrating them with Islamic principles to provide students with a holistic education.

 

According to NESA, there are four stages in Primary:

Students in each stage undertake core experiences in 6 key learning Areas (KLAs):

Specialist Subjects:

Language Other Than English – LOTE 2 periods per week

Parents have the choice of selecting either Arabic or Turkish as LOTE Islamic studies

Islamic studies (1 period week)

Tawheed (Oneness of God) and Iman (Belief and Creed), Ibadah (Worship), Akhlaq wal Adab (Islamic Manners and Etiquette) and Tareekh (Islamic history)

Qur’anic Studies (3 periods per week)

Tajweed (Rules of Recitation) and Tilawah (Proficiency of Reading and Reciting the Qur’an)

Extra-Curricular Activities, such as:

– Young Scholars Program (Hifz Program) – Public Speaking – School Camps
– Spelling Bee – Debating – Interschool Sports Opportunities

The extra-curricular activities offered may vary from term-to-term and are not within the scope of the usual school day. We recognise extra-curricular activities as being beneficial for our students in terms of increasing the range of experiences that children have and enabling them to make informed choices for adult life.

 

Assessment

Assessment is an integral part of teaching and learning. Effective assessment assists student learning and forms the basis for planning future learning activities. At Irfan College, effective assessment encourages, assists and enhances the learning of all students, and is inclusive of race, culture, class, gender, disability and enhances the relationship between teacher and student and the relationships among students. At Irfan College, effective assessment is ensured as it gives feedback to students on their progress, help students monitor and improve their learning, provide information for teachers about the student’s strengths and weaknesses as well as provide information to parents.

Teachers use a variety of ways to assess the knowledge, skills and understanding of their students. Students will benefit from a wide range of formal and informal, internal and external assessment programs.

At Irfan College, parent-teacher interviews are held two times per school year. These are:

Academic Reports

Two kinds of reports are issued to all students:

(1) SEMESTER 1 and SEMESTER 2 REPORTS – These reports are issued to all students to report on their progress. Digital copies of Semester reports are published on Sentral Parent Portal:

 

  • End of Semester 1
  • End of Semester 2

(2) INTERIM REPORTS – These are issued at the end of Term 1 and Term 3 to all students.
Students are expected to comply with the assessment requirements for each of their subjects. The Common Grade Scale is used to report student achievement which describes performance at each of five grade levels. (A-E)
